Some Basic Assertions Made About EM By Dr. Higa and Others

The Core EM Organisms May Have Arrived on Earth From Outer Space

A Few Miscellaneous Notes on EM-X and Tropical Plant Resources

A few of the uses for EM culture and products which are discussed herein may be contrary to regulatory rules or guidelines in your country, state, province, county or region.  Further, some practices may be frowned upon by qualified health professionals, and some practices could be dangerous to human health, or could be dangerous to animal health (or crop health!) if performed or processed incorrectly.  This site and these pages are offered for educational and informational purposes only.  If you choose to use EM or any other microbial inoculant products in any way for any application, you must first check with your local and national authorities to determine if your planned use complies with all applicable rules, regulations and requirements.  If you choose to use EM for any purposes involving human ingestion (or placement upon skin, etc.), I recommend that you first research all relevant information available in the literature and on the web carefully, and review the recommendations in the regulatory guidelines for your country or region.  Further, if brewing EM products for human or animal consumption, you will also wish to employ common sense and careful techniques.

Dr. Higa and other folks in EMRO have described the purple non-sulfur bacteria (aka "PNSB"; the species are some within Rhodobacter and Rhodopseudomonas sp.) in EM1 as the heart of the stuff.  As you may or may not be aware, Dr. Higa tends to wax beyond eloquent and kinda into the realm of near science fiction language when he describes some of the effects and abilities of EM1, and particularly of the PNSB.  For example, he talks about the PNSBs as being literally nuclear-powered, as having nuclear energy and "high nuclear resonance", and as being powered by "gravity waves"; I could go on, but I think you get the drift.  Such lingo can be flowery and fun, but it has the potential to alienate some serious scientific folk. 

And, as many of you know, Dr. Gabriel Cousens also tends to wax well beyond the limits of credulity at times when he writes about EM on the website for his Tree of Life Raw Foods Retreat center in Arizona, which (page) may be found at:

Likely the most relevant cluster of quotes from that page are these, from page 3:

"Dr. Higa believes that EM^TM actually helps clean the DNA and transmute it to a higher-resonance frequency. He believes it actually increases the vibration rate of the genes to make the super person.  In Japan, EM^TM helps the healing of cancer by weakening the cancer cells, decreasing free radicals, and strengthening the T-cells and the rest of the immune system...."
"....[EM] seems to help with many chronic degenerative diseases. It does this because it activates the healing potential of all our cells.  From a Kabalistic point of view, EM^TM plays an important role in our conscious evolution. It is taught that as our bodies become more complex, they become more conscious."

Of course, much as with the Denteme websites, there is a bit of hyperbole on this page which might stretch the credulity of our Western minds a bit.  Here are some examples from the paper:

These microorganisms can increase crop production two to ten times, help to revitalize soil, help to soften soil (especially hard desert soil like ours at the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center), help remove fungus, algae, and other contaminants from the water, and even improve the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of human health. EM TM rejuvenates the planet, the people on it, animals, plants, water, and the soil on every level."
"At the most basic level, EM TM brings the primordial cosmic resonance of the universe into our bodies and resonates us back into the grand harmony of our primordial Divine resonance. According to Dr. Higa, the person who discovered the combination of organisms that make up EM TM, it has the nuclear magnetic resonance of Quan Yin, known in Japan as Kanno Bodhisattva, the resonance of unconditional compassion.  The power of this resonance creates a field around us that transmutes all dissident energy into harmonious energy. In this way, EM TM brings healing to body, mind, and spirit."

"EM TM has many powerful effects in creating healing for the planet on a physical level. Not only does it replace chemical fertilizers and pesticides as well as remove the residue from the soil, but in addition, the nuclear magnetic resonance of EM TM neutralizes almost all dissident energies including X-ray radiation energy and even high-powered 120 AC energy. Some of the research in Russia connected with the Chernobyl radiation disaster is showing that EM TM neutralizes the radiation in the soil so that the radioactive particles cannot be incorporated into the biological systems of plants, animals, and humans.  There is also much evidence that EM TM actually transmutes the radioactive materials so that they are no longer radioactive."

Well, I have joked more than once on some of the lists which cover EM topics, and particularly on the Live-foods list, that maybe the EM1 organisms are really from outer space, and were "sent here" to carry a greater degree of organization (order), coherence, love and compassion to Earth and to the beings on Earth.  That has remained a joke, until now... .. please see the section immediately below...

First, Some Background
First, let me remind you that the PNSBs are extremely tolerant of cold and heat.  They are found in great quantities in icicles and in other natural ice formations in nature all across the world.  They are also extreme thermophiles or at least extremely thermo-tolerant: they can easily tolerate temperatures of 80 degrees C and some scientists believe that they will still grow at that temperature.  One of the EM microbiological culture technicians in the EMRO organization who was trained by Dr. Higa claims that according to Bergey's Manual of Bacteriology, the PNSBs will survive temperatures of over 1,000 degrees C (yes, that is about 1,860 degrees F!). I have not been able to validate that statement via Bergey's Manual or via any other authoritative sources in mainstream microbiology.  However, I have been able to find an article by Dr. Higa in the Proceedings of the 1st International EM Medical Conference, held in Okinawa, Japan in November 2001 (also known as Clinical and Basic Medical Research on EM-X, Volumes 1 & 2), wherein he relates that while most mainstream microbiologists maintain that PNSBs (aka phototrophic organisms) are killed at temperatures anywhere near 100 degrees C, microbiologists on the EMRO staff have been able, in a series of repeated and tightly-designed studies, to mix these phototrophic organisms with ceramic powder and fire it (also known as calcining) at 1,200 C for over an hour, and have been able in each such test to successfully culture the phototrophic organisms from the post-firing ceramic powder... By the way, if you are wondering why I am choosing to emphasize that PNSBs seem able to tolerate extremes of heat and cold, you will see in a short while why I have mentioned this.

A number of serious mainstream astronomers and biologists, some of whom call themselves "astrobiologists", and all of whom have PhDs in their scientific fields, seriously believe that some or much microbial life on Earth likely came from outer space via meteorites, and moreover, many believe that new microbial life, including viruses, continues to come to earth as hitchhikers on meteorites.  Indeed, two of the best well-known advocates of this theory have been the famed astronomers Fred Hoyle and N.C. Wickramasinghe, and articles by each of them as well as other theorists have been published on this topic in several peer-reviewed journals in astronomy and biochemistry.  The most recent book/compendium by Hoyle and N.C. Wickramasinghe is entitled "Astronomical Origins of Life: Steps Towards Panspermia" (324pp, ISBN 0-7923-6081-8, Kluwer Academic Publishers, April 2000. Now, the Best is Yet to Come!
An article which has appeared both in the scientific journals and which is partially reproduced on their website shows that it is extremely likely that PNSBs (yes, the critters found in EM1) have hitchhiked to earth on meteorites, and they cite in their webpage article, at:

photos showing what they believe to be fossilized Rhodopseudomonas organisms in the remains of a meteorite.  In this case, they theorize that the magnetite found in the Martian meteorite was of biogenic origin, and was deposited by Rhodspseudomonas organisms.

Some scientists have gone further, and have demonstrated that laser and Raman spectrophotometric surveys of the surface of Mars done by various Mars orbiters show that pigments apparently still remain on the surface of once-flooded areas of the planet which show that species such as Rhodopseudomonas and Rhodobacter (yes, the PNSBs found in EM1...) lived in the mud.  One such article may be found at:

Others have speculated that these organisms did not originate on Mars initially, but may have brought to Mars by meteorites from distant star systems....

I am amazed... even near-mainstream science sometimes goes beyond the limits of my joking....

The top three round images on the right are supposed to be images of sample organisms from the major classes of organisms found in EM1, which are yeast, lactic acid bacteria and purple non-sulfur bacteria (further pictures show actinomycetes, no longer included in the USA formula for EM1.)

The images depict, from top down:

• purple non-sulfur bacteria (PNSB), which are mildly rod-shaped, with tiny whip-like flagellate "tails"

• lactic acid bacteria, which are cylindrical, aka rod-shaped
