Introduction
to Effective Microorganisms (EM)
Human Uses
of EM:
Notice and Disclaimer
(this notice
appears
on each page on this site)
A few of the
uses for
EM culture and products which are discussed herein may
be contrary
to regulatory rules or guidelines in your country, state, province,
county
or region. Further, some practices may be frowned upon by
qualified
health professionals, and some practices could be dangerous to human
health,
or could be dangerous to animal health (or crop health!) if
performed
or processed incorrectly. This site and these pages are
offered for
educational and informational purposes only. If you choose to
use
EM or any other microbial inoculant products in any way for any
application,
you must first check with your local and national authorities to
determine
if your planned use complies with all applicable rules, regulations and
requirements. If you choose to use EM for any purposes
involving
human ingestion (or placement upon skin, etc.), I recommend that
you first research all relevant information available in the
literature and
on the web carefully, and review the recommendations in the
regulatory guidelines for
your
country or region. Further, if brewing EM products
for
human or animal consumption, you will also wish to employ common sense
and careful techniques.
Any
statements and opinions
offered in these pages are my opinions only offered in reportorial and
informational mode, and do not reflect in any way the views of any
creators,
producers, distributors, marketer or vendors of various EM-type
cultures
or products. Please note that I (the author) am not in any way
associated
with any of the above-referenced persons or organizations, although I
may
occasionally perform consulting for some companies, entities and
individuals
in the EM field. All opinions and statements remain my own
reportage
and opinions, and at times my opinions and/or practices may differ
wildly
from those of the various creators, producers, distributors
or vendors
of EM products or EM-like products.
Human
Uses -- EM Products for Drinking,
Bathing
Warning: The practices
in this section are NOT recommended, but offered for information and
education
only because so many folks have asked how I do it myself, and what I
have
learned. The author accepts no liabilty for folks who may
choose
to play with consuming EM or EM products internally.
Please note that the
following
statement of opinion -- like all reportage and opinion on this website
-- does NOT reflect the opinion or position of the EMRO
organizations,
of Dr. Higa, nor of EMTrading or other official EM channels or venues,
but rather my personal opinion and observation. In fact, the
folks
in the EM organization(s) warn that EM and their EM products are not
for
human consumption. Having said the above, it does appear, based upon a
number of stories I have heard, that the EM shops in cities and towns
Japan
sell EM and EM products for the express purpose of human consumption,
although
they may be a bit low-key about it.

Drinking Activated
EM as an Antioxidant and Probiotic Health Beverage
I
have been drinking small
amounts of my special Activated EM (aka EM Extension) daily, and also
using
it as a mouthwash. I have also learned, via a page on their
website, that Dr. Gabriel Cousen's raw vegan retreat center in Arizona, named
Tree
of Life Rejuvenation Center, has been using EM to ferment and pre-treat
raw foods, and also for human consumption. I had, at one time,
assumed
that only some die-hard raw foodists like myself (and, of course, the
raw
vegans at Dr. Cousen's center) were playing with taking this stuff
internally.
Well,
I have recently discovered
that the number of folks in the US who are experimenting with ingesting
EM is far greater than I thought, and goes well beyond raw vegans, the
raw Paleo eaters (myself included), the Gabriel Cousens people (raw
vegans),
and even includes a bunch of more "normal" (not raw foodists, not even
necessarily even health nuts) farmers, organic farmers and
gardeners...
I have more recently discovered that the phenomenon of using EM and EM
products as a probiotic and antioxidant beverage/food goes even further
than that; it appears to be worldwide. I have been
corresponding
privately with an EM researcher in Japan, and it turns out that
numerous
people in Japan -- again, not even raw foodists, but just folks
interested
in health -- are all busy drinking small (or large!) amounts of
Activated
EM liquid (aka EM Extension) every day, and feel that they are getting
all kinds of health benefits from it. Some folks in Japan,
including
one of my correspondents, drink up to 1 liter per day of the
full-strength
stuff (a variety of EM Extension.) His perception is that the
health-conscious
folks in Japan are usually about 3 steps ahead of us in the USA -
witness
the fact that "alkaline ionized water" (electrolyzed reduced water, or
ERW) got its start there many years ago; I largely agree. So
their
fascination with drinking Activated EM should not be too surprising.....
I
have learned from correspondents
in Japan that there are "EM shops" in many towns and cities, and the
main
reason they exist is not just to sell folks EM for household use
(flowers,
gardens toilets, plants, waste, compost, shower stalls) or
for use
in building construction (concrete, plaster, wood, etc.) or for
agricultural
use (remember, Japan is a very crowded country -- most folks and EM
shop
customers live in cities), but rather, they sell the stuff (EM1, EM
Ceramic
powder, EM Ceramic shapes) for human consumption!
As
noted above, the practice
of drinking EM Extension and related beverages seems quite common in
the
USA (although officially discouraged by the EM organization here in the
USA) and in Japan, and folks in Japan are actually given guidelines on
how to do this by their local EM shops. Folks who drink this
stuff
seem to feel that it yields any of several healthful effects, and view
it as a "health beverage", loaded with antioxidants and other vital
nutrients.
A
lot of the folks in Japan
(mentioned above) -- following recipes given them by the EM shops --
brew
their EM Extension in 2 liter soda/water bottles (those clear PET
bottles)
with some added salt (actually, quite a bit of salt -- 1 teaspoon per 2
liters, far more than I use here....), and then brew it in sunlight, as
opposed to brewing in the dark (the way we usually do it in the
USA).
Some of these folks brew new bottles of EM Extension constantly, some
with
bottles on literally every windowsill in their home.... and
drink
it almost like water, as a "health drink". The local EM shops
apparently
give them full directions for doing this, and also share favorite
recipes....
One thing my correspondent told me which fascinated me was this:
"I found about
EM completely by accident, standing in front of the local EM
shop
waiting
for a bus! I went in and was able to feel chi
energy radiating
from the
bottles
of liquid, and started asking questions.
That was years
ago and I am
still
learning...."
I
have learned through EMRO
that they have grown rather concerned about the large quantities of
Activated
EM consumed daily by some folks in Japan and Thailand. Some people in
these
countries apparently drink EM like water, literally liters per day,
since
they feel it offers great health benefits, and EMRO has been trying to
find ways to get them to decrease their consumption.

contains a tremendous amount of information on a line of several
fermented
antioxidant nutritional supplement brews using a microbial culture
derived
from the Effective Microorganisms culture (aka EM-1 or EM1 or EM) which
were direct-marketed on a very small scale at one point during early
2003
to friends and acquaintances under the brand names Sootheox
and Quenchox. To learn
more about these custom-crafted
nutritional supplement brews and some of their nutritional properties,

Apparent Benefits
I
have not yet heard any
stories of negative or harmful results from ingesting EM1 or products
made
therefrom. However, I have heard a number of reports from
folks --
even from folks already on very healthful diets which were at least
partially
raw -- who felt that ingesting EM (usually by drinking Activated EM)
helped
improve their stamina, robustness, health and vitality. For
some
reason, I seem to have particularly heard several stories from folks
with
IBD or IBS (Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
and
Crohn's disease (actually part of the IBD cluster) who have had marked
success with ingesting EM or EM products in comparison with other
methods.
I have also heard a number of stories of healing of minor illness and
problems,
including sinus problems, gum and tooth problems, and numerous reports
of vastly increased hardiness and resistance to infectious
illnesses.

Gargling and Spraying
Sinuses with EM and Activated EM (aka EM Extension)
If
you review the posts
on several e-mail list groups on the web, you will notice that folks
seem
to be using Activated EM (aka EM Extension) -- usually diluted in water
-- to treat athlete's foot infections, to treat smelly shoes, as a
gargle
when they have a cold or sore throat, or to spray in their sinuses for
sinus infections.
Putting EM Extension
in Bath Water
Putting
EM Extension (anywhere
from 1 ounce to a quart [liter] or more) in bath water seems quite
common
in the USA (although officially discouraged by the EM organization here
in the USA) and Japan, and folks seem to feel that it
yields a
healthful benefit.
Using
EM Ceramics to
Treat Drinking, Cooking and Bath Water
A
number of folks in the
USA and Japan use the EM Ceramic solids and the EM-X ceramic solids
("shapes")
to treat drinking and cooking water prior to use, or to treat bath
water
before and during the bath. This practice is described, and
hints
offered on how to do it, in printed materials available in Japan for
Japanese
customers.

Human Uses -- EM for
Producing
Monatomic
Elements, Bread, Beer
Warning:
This practices
in this section are NOT recommended, but offered for information and
education
only because so many folks have asked how I do it myself, and what I
have
learned . The
author accepts no liability for
folks who may choose to play with consuming EM or EM products
internally.
Please
note that the
following statement of opinion -- like all reportage and opinion on
this
website -- does NOT reflect the opinion or position of the
EMRO organizations,
of Dr. Higa, nor of EMTrading or other official EM channels or venues,
but rather my personal opinion and observation. In fact, the
folks
in the EM organization(s) warn that EM and their EM products (with the
exception of the Denteme Compete50 products which they do advertise on
their websites) are not for human consumption.
Producing Monatomic
or Ormus Elements (Minerals)
A
small number of folks
in the Western world -- myself largely included -- seem to feel that
the
benefits of ingesting EM and EM products go well beyond their
beneficial
antioxidant effects and healthful probiotic effects, and also include
the
ability to transform various minerals and trace elements into more
usable
or healthful forms. One of the forms to which EM is suspected
of
converting several elements is something called the "Ormus" form or
state
(aka monatomic, high-spin, super high spin, deformed nuclei, manna or
m-state
elements); such Ormus (monatomic, manna, deformed nuclei, m-state)
elements
(minerals) are claimed to have superior and even near-magical
nutritional
properties (in humans and animals.)
Now,
I start to groan just
about here, because the ormus and monatomic (or, if you will, m-state,
super high spin, deformed nuclei or manna) element worlds, much like
the
worlds of so-called "clustered water" and "structured water", are, in
my
opinion, rather full of hype and nonsense, along with generous helpings
of pseudo-science. Yes, I feel that there is indeed something totally
and
deeply valid, genuine, true and real to each of these fields, and that
there are at least a few valid products and claims in each of these
fields.
However, it is my opinion that each of these fields is also so full of
horseshit and pseudo-science, that it would take a lot of EM
(well,
EM Extension or bokashi) to decompose it all.... So, in a nutshell,
that
is why I feel a vague aversion to even talking much about the ormus
(aka
monatomic) materials in connection with EM.
However,
plowing ahead for
at least a moment, there is some evidence that one of the beneficial
effects
of the EM organisms is that they may help to convert various elements
(minerals,
etc.) from their compound or metallic form to their ormus form (aka
monatomic
elements, or m-state or manna), and to somehow amplify the effect of
ormus
elements already present in foodstuffs or in water, etc. There are
several
clusters of folks actively investigating and playing with this idea
right
now (one cluster is within the raw foods world), and if you were to do
a search on Yahoo Groups, there may be one or more e-mail list groups
which
are discussing this and related topics.
Monatomic Elements and
Commercial Denteme (EM) Dental Product
As
you may have already
noticed if you have read the section immediately below on Denteme
Compete50
dental products (made with EM and EM technology), it happens that they
claim "monatomic precious metals" as one of the ingredients on the
ingredients
list of their Denteme Compete50 toothpowder. Interesting!
I
wonder how they analyzed it?
Basics -- Getting
Started
The
way I usually do this
is to make a one-gallon batch EM Extension, but with generous
amounts (usually
6 to 8 heaping tablespoons) of rock dust (usually Azomite; sometimes
Pascalite)
added. I may start the batch with a mix of EM stock culture and
10-day-old
EM Extension (at its peak) from a previous batch of
Extension. Shake
or stir thru 3rd to 6th day of brewing (dependent upon how fast brew
matures);
do not stir or shake afterward. I hope to add more
information to
this section as time passes!

Making
Long-Fermentation
EM Sourdough Bread
These
instructions come
from someone who has vast experience in the EM world, and has been
involved
with EM for over 15 years. Basically (please remember that I
am used
to making long-fermentation sourdough breads, and these instructions
are
geared only for folks with similar experience):
-
do
not attempt this unless you
are already proficient at making long-fermentation time sourdough
breads
using ancient sourdough cultures (may be purchased by mail)
-
make
up a good live sponge or
bubbly culture of activated sourdough organisms from your ancient
sourdough
culture till very active
-
make
up a good live sponge or
bubbly culture of EM using 4 ounces of Activated EM, a bit of molasses,
water and flour and allow repeated rises and wash-downs till it is very
active
-
make
sourdough dough using 3/4
cup to 1 cup of the bubbly active sourdough flour culture, and 1 cup of
the active EM flour
-
make
a long-fermentation time
sourdough bread, with a total rise time at least 34 hours at room
temperature
or at least 20 hours at 89 degrees F
-
after
last rise (use one, two
or three rises, as you usually do, and as you prefer for
long-fermentation
sourdough), form into final loaf
-
put
loaf on pan or baking stone
-
bake
in pre-heated oven for
35+ minutes at 375 degrees F
-
if
any of the above lost you,
and you still want to try it, go to Ed Wood's Sourdoughs
International website, and purchase his book entitled Classic
Sourdoughs, and learn sourdough baking!
Making EM Beer
These
instructions come
from someone who has vast experience in the EM world, and has been
involved
with EM for over 15 years. These instructions are geared only
toward
folks who have already made good batches of homebrew beer, and are
comfortable
with the process. Essentially, the process of making EM beer is a
double
fermentation process. Instructions:

Some
Notes on EM Dental Products
As
some of the readers of
this site may already be aware, EM has been available in the USA in at
least one line of "probiotic" live-organism dental products since late
2002, and is freely marketed on several websites. The EM-related
product
line of which I am aware is called Denteme, and the products consist of
a mouthwash and a tooth powder (dental powder), each of which is
marketed
under the brand name Denteme Compete50. Each Denteme
Compete50 product
is claimed to contain plenty of the live probiotic EM organisms as
beneficial
probiotics for the mouth (oral cavity), including teeth and gums, and
for
nearby mucous membranes. Their general argument seems to be
that
the good organisms in the Denteme Compete50 products compete
successfully
with the undesirable decay (or inflammatory) organisms often found in
the
mouth. I fully agree with this reasoning.
Some
of the marketing verbiage
currently found (late January 2003) on some of the Denteme Compete
websites
loses me (e.g., makes me crazy) with vague jargon about "nuclear powered
organisms" and good "magnetism". For example, the toothpowder
page on the main Denteme website (as of February 3, 2003; the
material
was not copyrighted as of that date) relates the following:
"
Compete50 toothpowder has more magnetic attraction than bacteria to
steal
the gas away from bacteria. The nuclear power has such magnetic
attraction
that it attracts the bacteria to the nuclear powder to adhere and have
no energy to grow. With no energy resource and no power to grow, the
bacteria
can not grow and cause dental disease.
Gas resources
are oxidants that carry extra energy to make bacteria grow. The best
way
to counter an oxidant is to use an antioxidant. The best antioxidant is
one that has nuclear power. Vitamins and food antioxidants have
electromagnetic
power and are not as effective as Compete50 that uses nuclear power."
Sigh!
Such statements
make me groan! I suspect that something gets lost in the
translation
from Japanese! However, my critiques of their advertising verbiage
aside,
I have heard only good things from users about their experiences with
these
Denteme Compete products, and I have recommended these products to
numerous
friends and acquaintances. Additionally, as many
readers have
likely surmised from reading the sections on human use of EM
(immediately
above), a number of folks who brew EM and EM-related products for home,
garden or agricultural (or human) use have simply made their own
probiotic
EM mouthwashes and tooth powders from various EM products such as EM
Extension
and the EM Super Cera C Ceramic Powder, and many have reported great
results
.
Ingredients
Incidentally,
the ingredients
list on the label on the Denteme Compete50 mouthwash and on one of
their
marketing websites reveals (at least as of February 2003) that it
contains
(not listed in order of quantity) the probiotic EM organisms, the EM
Ceramic
powder, water, blueberry powder (flavor and antioxidant), and tea tree
oil. The latter surprises me, but I assume that they add it
to make
the product more appealing to dentists who might find the "antiseptic"
qualities of tea tree oil attractive for gum health.
As
of early February 2003,
the ingredients list on a container of the Denteme Compete50 tooth
powder
(some have been shipped without labels...) reads: "quartz mullite,
tapioca
flour, antioxidant berry, vanilla, menthol crystals, maltodextrin,
colloidal
minerals, monatomic precious metals". As you can
guess, the
quartz mullite is apparently the EM Ceramic powder.
Although
I make my own EM
probiotic mouthwash and other health products at home for my own use, I
have heard only good things from users about their experiences with the
commercial Denteme Compete50 dental care products, and I have
recommended
the products to numerous friends and acquaintances.

Claimed
Variance in Batches of EM Source Culture,
and
Means of Managing Inevitable Batch Variance
At
least several users of
EM in the USA who have purchased EM from EMTrading (late 2002) have
reported
that there seems to be some variance in the strength and "abilities" of
various batches of EM source culture, especially when purchased in
winter
and cold months. I have heard such reports myself, I have
found such
reports on e-mail list groups on the web, and staffers at EMTrading
have
confirmed that they have received such reports since October 2002, but
only from customers who are very sensitive to minor nuances of batch
quality.
On the other hand, I purchased two bottles (quart) of EM from EMTrading
at each of two different times in December, and had absolutely no
problem
with either order; each batch worked wonderfully. I am no
longer
sure, beyond the obvious possibility of freezing during shipment (which
would cause some organisms to decrease in count, but not drastically),
how much of this variance may be in fact real, but I can offer the
following
suggestions as possible ways of coping with such variance....
I
always suggest strongly
to EM users that they ALWAYS make Activated EM (aka
EM Extension)
from the stock liquid, and use only the finished EM
Extension liquid
for all culturing activity, rather than ever using the stock material
directly
from the source bottle of EM. I suspect strongly
(and this
has been confirmed by an EM expert at SCD who is one of the co-owners,
and also by knowledgeable staff at EMRO USA) that this
(extension/activation)
procedure may help to normalize or equalize variance across source
bottle
batches, may assist in making things more "even-keeled", and may also
help
to optimize the flora and balance of flora in each batch (e.g., improve
it...). Let me take a stab at explaining the reasoning behind
my
suggestion:
1)
It is likely true that
different batches of EM may vary at least slightly in
strength, in
degree of dormancy, and even perhaps in the exact balance across/among
various species of organisms in the brew. In fact, this is only to be
expected
for anything containing live organisms. Even in a lab-quality
microbial
inoculant product selling for $450 or more per quart, there would be
variance
across batches, and also variance across time as the stock culture
"ages"
and depletes its food supply in the container.. Since a
quart of
EM sells for a very affordable price far below that price bracket, it
is
only fair to expect some variance across batches; such is the nature of
mixed-organism cultures and the art of culturing and storing
them.
2)
It seems quite well-established
that as a bottle of EM stock culture ages, it undergoes even further
shifts
in the kinds of variance (strength, dormancy, balance across species)
noted
in item #1 above, simply due to the passage of time and that the
organisms
are slowly exhausting their food supply (mostly sugars and other
carbohydrates
from molasses.) This is only normal to expect, and indeed, to
expect
otherwise could be very unrealistic.
3)
It is established that
the stock EM culture in the USA is, and always has been, cultured in
vats
in Tucson, Arizona by EMRO (at one time until about
two years
ago, the brewing was done in AZ by EM Technology Network,
a non-profit
organization.
) To clear
up some confusion, some staffers at EMTrading have told customers that
EM was brewed in big vats in Kansas City by EMTrading until the end of
2002; this is decidedly not true. I have been assured by a knowledgeable
co-owner of SCD and by folks at EMRO USA that all brewing of batches of
EM in the USA has always been done in Arizona, first by EMTech, and
later,
by EMRO USA.
And
now for a bit of related
murky lore which begs to be cleared up: Other customers and I have been
told by staffers at EMTrading (telephone communication) that a number
of
consecutive EM batches are brewed from the same batch of EM starter
culture,
and that to ensure purity and consistency across batches, the Japanese
parent company insists that the distributors/brewers in each country
start
anew several times per year (the person I spoke with at
EMTrading
believed it was three times per year, but she was not sure) with a
brand-new
batch of regional EM microbial starter culture, shipped fresh from
Japan.
Several of us have also been told by these same staffers that the folks
in Japan sometimes change the culture for various reasons. I have
researched
this matter -- and this story -- carefully, and I can tell you that
there
is no truth to the following 2 items, that they are 100% mythology:
1)
that any starter culture
is ever shipped from Japan to the USA to "refresh" the culture. Rather,
the USA regional culture is cultured from local native flora, readily
available
in the USA.
2)
that anyone in
Japan changes the starter culture for the USA regional culture (or
elsewhere)
at any time.
In addition:
3)
It appears quite well-established
that a goodly amount of EM inoculant batches from EMTrading store
suffer
at least some degree of cold damage -- often including outright
freezing
-- during shipping in winter-time in the USA. This cold
damage may
easily exaggerate or amplify each of the sources of variance noted
above
in item #1. It is quite well known that with extreme cold or freezing,
some of the lactic acid bacteria and yeast will be damaged, and thus the
total count of such organisms will be somewhat decreased, but not
fatally
-- usually, brewing Activated EM (aka EM Extension) will help the
damaged
populations to quickly recover their population counts and to keep
growing.
However,
the cold damage
may often be occult, meaning that the customer is often unaware, at the
time when they open their package, that there had necessarily been any
cold damage (unless the bottle is still frozen stiff...!) I
have
not been able to understand, in light of all the frozen-batch horror
stories
I have heard from friends and consulting clients, why
EMTrading does
not start using foam-slab insulated boxes with pre-warmed gel paks to
provide
thermal buffering/mass. It would likely increase S/H costs by
four
dollars, and could be offered as an shipping-upgrade option to
customers
in cold climates. I discussed this issue with a staffer at EMTrading in
early February 2003, and she liked the suggestion; they may start
offering
this option to customers.
In light of the above 3 summaries, I always suggest that EM Extension be brewed, and then --
after fermentation is complete -- that only the EM Extension be used to
make the various EM products or batches you intend to make, and for the
following reasons (excuse my using the same primitive numbering system):
4)
It appears that
the brewing of EM Extension serves to wake up or activate the various
organisms
It particularly awakens or activates the lactic acid bacteria and the
yeasts;
any activation of the phototropic organism will be less massive, since
the only food for these organisms will be certain wastes from the first
two classes of organisms. It is my suspicion that this
activation
period, especially due to the presence of the molasses (and a bit of
sea
salt and rock dust, which I always use) would help to allow the
synergistic
culture to re-establish an optimal balance as the various organisms
activated,
and, in effect, to normalize (and optimize) the culture, as well as
allow
it to acclimate to local environment, including the molasses in use,
the
local water, and other local conditions.
5)
The EM folks all
seem to feel (I have been told this repeatedly) that there is something
near-mystical about using molasses to awaken or activate the culture
(as
in making EM Extension). I have heard much the same from
correspondents
in Japan about what the staffers at EM shops tell them.
Apparently,
the EM folks believe that there is something about the unique mix of
sugars,
complex carbohydrates, plant matter, and lots of minerals in the
molasses
which makes it ideal (if not magical) for awakening and activating the
culture and allowing the various strains to "spread their
wings".
I was finally able, in early 2003, to get this sense about molasses
confirmed.
A co-owner of SCD who has trained extensively in EM has confirmed my
sense
as related above, and told me that molasses has always, since EM
originated
(and even before... as Dr. Higa evolved it) been the
culturing media
of choice for most of the organisms, that it is optimal and "number
one",
and that nothing else has yet come close. Like me, he
believes that
the unique mix of simple sugars, complex carbs, plant
products, minerals
and trace minerals in molasses make it nearly perfect as a culture
media
to allow EM organisms to activate.
6) My concern about
using stock EM culture (which is at least somewhat dormant) straight
from
the bottle to make EM products (e.g., skipping Activated EM) is that it
seems that only some of the organisms may be able to thrive in such an
environment, while others may starve, and that this factor could or
would
grossly AMPLIFY or exaggerate any normal variance across EM source
culture
batches (e.g., some of your EM product batches might turn out
really
good, while others might turn out bad or indifferent...)
Thus, the solution
above is offered as a possible means of managing or controlling some of
the sources of variance...

High Quality Sea Vegetables
The best supplier for highest-quality hand-harvested bulk sea veggies
of all types, hand-harvested in Maine, is:
Larch Hanson
Circle of Friends
P. O. Box 57
Steuben, ME 04680
207-546-2875
These veggies are not necessarily in granulated or meal form, but dried
whole sea veggies.
Please note that all wild blueberry juice
concentrate, cherry juice
concentrate and pomegranate juice concentrate used in my own Sootheox
research
brews (for example, the Amber Molasses Mineral varieties) comes
only from Brownwood Acres Farms. I recommend their juice
concentrates
highly! They also have some concentrates available in certified organic
form as well.
Kelp, Granules or Meal
Kelp: Well, at least two or three different sea veggies are sold under
the name kelp. Most folks in the nutrition world buy bulk bags of
animal-feed
grade kelp meal from organic farm suppliers, because it is cheap and
works
well for a variety of uses.
However, the stuff is also available in "human grades" under the name
"kelp granules", via natural foods vendors. Avoid the small 1 ounce or
3 ounce packages at health food stores -- they are a rip-off. Instead,
a number of online web vendors sell human grade kelp granules in 1 lb.
3 lb., or 5 lb. packages. Usually they will charge from $3.50
to
$15.00 per pound. A few examples of such vendors are:
Mother Nature.com, around $3.50 per
pound,
http://www.mothernature.com/shop/detail.cfm/sku/01403
Maine Coast Sea Vegetables, around $5.50 per
pound,

You may also wish to ask Larch Hanson at Circle of Friends (above) if
he
can help you....
A good source for 40 lb. bulk bags of animal-feed
grade kelp meal is
Fertrell, a producer/distributor of organic farming supplies in PA,
which
sells via retailers such as organic gardening/farming suppliers all
over
the East Coast. You can find their list of distributors/resellers at http://www.fertrell.com/
